Carpet Construction
The specific construction or manufacturing method of a carpet affects both its performance and appearance. Most carpet is made by one of four methods: tufted, woven, needle-punched, or hand-knotted. Different types of curled or twisted tuffs gives you different look, and the different fibers the carpet is made from determines the feel and durability.
Carpet Styles and Textures
Texture. Curled or twisted tufts make for a textured surface that helps mask footprints. Especially suitable for less formal décors. Frieze. A type of textured carpet with highly twisted tufts that curl at the pile surface. Especially suitable for higher traffic areas.
Loop. Loop pile with tufts of equal height or multi-level loops. Multi-level loops form beautiful patterns using solid colors Broad application with durable wear in either construction.
Pattern Cut Pile. Sophisticated look made using Saxony yarn, but generating a pattern look by tufting cut pile and loop pile with a level pile height. Appropriate for formal or informal room schemes.
Cut Pile Berber. Casual cut pile construction using a combination of big tufts and small tufts. This type of carpet usually contains small flecks of dark color on lighter shade background colors. Informal in construction but adds excitement to any room.
Saxony. A dense level-cut pile. Yarn tufts are closely packed, presenting a smooth, luxurious surface. Generally for formal settings.
Cut-Loop. Yarns are tufted into large islands of high cut tufts and lower loop tufts to form a sculptured pattern. Suits more informal settings.
Carpet Fiber
Carpets are made from synthetic and natural fibers. The type of fiber used and the way the carpet is constructed determine how well the carpet will stand up to spills, pets, and daily traffic. Approximately 97 percent of all carpet is produced using synthetic fibers that are designed to feature style, easy maintenance, and outstanding value. There are five basic types of carpet pile fibers.
Nylon: It is the most popular and represents two-thirds of the pile fibers used in the United States. Wear-resistant, resilient, withstands the weight and movement of furniture, and provides brilliant color. Ability to conceal and resist soils and stains. Generally good for all traffic areas. Solution-dyed nylon is colorfast because color is added in the fiber production.
Olefin (polypropylene): Strong, resists wear and permanent stains, and is easily cleaned. Notably colorfast because color is added during fiber production. Resists static electricity and is often used in both indoor and outdoor installations because of its resistance to moisture and mildew. Used in synthetic turf for sports surfaces, and in the home for patios and game rooms. Many Berbers are made of olefin.
Polyester: Noted for luxurious, soft "hand" when used in thick, cut-pile textures. Has excellent color clarity and retention. Easily cleaned, and resistant to water-soluble stains.
Acrylic: Offers the appearance and feel of wool without the cost. Has low static level and is moisture and mildew-resistant. Commonly used in velvet and level-loop constructions, and often in bath and scatter rugs.
Wool: Noted for its luxury and performance, wool is soft, has high bulk, and is available in many colors. Generally, wool is somewhat more expensive than synthetic fibers.
Blends: A wool/nylon blend combines the superior look and comfort of wool with the durability of nylon. Acrylic/olefin and nylon/olefin are other popular blends, offering good characteristics of each fiber.
PET Carpet
A carpet alternative that makes sense, PET carpet is manufactured with yarn created from reclaimed polyester resins of two-liter soda bottles and ketchup containers. Commonly known as Pop Bottle Carpet, recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) polyester carpet is uniquely strong and durable. The quality of our polyester resins remain unchanged throughout the recycling process. Indeed, recycled PET has a higher melting point and higher density than nylon which give the carpet many superior characteristics. In general, our carpets tend to be heavier, thicker and more luxurious than conventional nylon carpets. Moreover, recycled polyester carpets consistently demonstrate superior stain resistance over nylon construction. Eco-Products is pleased to offer over 20 styles and 400 colors of this durable cut pile carpeting
