Company Creates Custom Granite Countertops
By: Ashley Langston
Melling Granite, a company that specializes in granite countertops, opened in September 2006 with the intent of helping homeowners find the perfect fit. Mark Melling said he had worked for about 15 years in the cabinet business, and the company he worked for did a lot of custom cabinets. He had also done countertops through that business. He and his wife, Corri, really liked granite, and he said they saw their type of business as something the community needed. A lot of people were getting their granite countertops from St. George, he said. He said granite is a higher end countertop, and he likes that. “I like nice things,” he said. “I like to do a good job.”
Corri Melling said they get the granite in slabs and then cut it to fit the customers’ needs. Every countertop they make is special, she said. “Every countertop with granite is unique because every slab is different,” she said. She said they can do other kinds of natural stone as well, such as marble, onyx, and slate, but they use granite most frequently. She likes it because it is a very durable surface. Foods can be cut on it, hot dishes do not damage it, and it cleans very easily, she said.
In addition to kitchen countertops, Melling Granite also does vanity tops, fireplace surrounds and mantles, showers, and other areas of the home where the customer wants natural stone. They also sell natural stone sinks. Corri Melling said vanity tops are often discounted because they can be cut out of “remnants,” or part of a slab that was left over from a countertop being cut out. Mark Melling said they give free estimates, and they will measure the cabinets and cut the countertop to fit exactly how the customer wants it. He said customers can come to their showroom and Corri Melling will help them decide what they want. It has been nice to have a woman’s touch, he said. She is good to work with the customers, show them the different options, and help them choose something they are completely comfortable with. Corri Melling said it is important for customers to make the right choice and get something they love, because granite is a higher-end product and it lasts for a long time. She wants to make sure they will still be happy with it 20 years down the road, she said. “We really want to help people through the process,” she said. She said they want all their customers to become educated about granite.
Mark Melling said they cut the countertops out of slabs, cut the edges, and polish them. Most of the work is done by hand, he said. The way the edge is cut can even be custom, Mark Melling said. There are a lot of options so the customer can make that countertop really his or her own. “We want every job to be different,” he said. They also now have a lifetime sealer product, which has a lifetime guarantee so customers never have to worry about getting their granite sealed again, he said. He said they do countertops in newly constructed homes, but they also do remodels and can just replace a countertop or vanity top. The whole process, including measuring, cutting and installing, usually takes about a week, depending on the amount of granite being purchased. If it is a remodel or just a countertop replacement, they try to only be in the customer’s home for one day. He said they call the night before and let them know it’s ready, then they will remove the old countertop and install the new one. As a very hands-on owner, Mark Melling said he goes on every install, and he always supervises everything very closely. It is usually him and one employee who do the installs. They have a good crew with years of experience, he said.
Melling Granite is located at 436 N. 300 West, #1 in Cedar City. They are open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and they can be reached at 867-0099.
